'Project Runway' Season 8, Episode 12: Mike Bloomberg Stops By, Chr...

By Dawn Fallik Five left. The final challenge. Who will make it to the red carpet on this season of "Project Runway"? It's down to Mondo, Michael C. April, Andy and Gretchen, whose self-important inflated ego needs such a smackdown that we can barely contain ourselves. Also, what is up with her weird braids, last worn by Gretl, the smallest child in the "Sound of Music"? New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, noted fashion ambassador, appears to tell them to draw inspiration from a New York City landmark. They have $500. Because we've had this challenge before, the bar is high - take the fabulous gutter glitter dress from Andre. Who is probably at Red Lobster with Tim Gunn with Santino. Michael C. takes the Statue of Liberty. April takes the Brooklyn Bridge. Mondo, sporting a small rainbow umbrella on a beautiful day, takes the Brooklyn Bridge as well. Andy takes Central Park. And Gretchen is underinspired by New York City's Lower East Side. She just wants to make something that's her. Might I suggest Leona Helmsley's hotel? Michael C. 's impression of Michael Kors is so dead-on, it's scary. Andy gave birth to a Chinese prostitute dress. Mondo is freaking out about sequin fabric. Gretchen continues to give advice to everyone. Tim agrees with Mondo to toss the sequins, but sees the bridge grid in his various black and white fabrics. April's abstract coat dress with tube sleeves and zippers is too much. Tim tells her to edit. Michael C. isn't being ambitious enough and his dress looks like a tortured mess. He warns Andy to make sure his model doesn't look like one of the Housewives of New Jersey. Snap! Gretchen is doing her bohemian thing and was inspired by brick. Tim tells her to stop talking about herself. Gretchen says she loves Tim and really appreciates him but we just can't believe anything nice she says anymore. Because PR is now 90 minutes and there are only five designers, there is a lot of filler rambling this episode. Sadly, no shots of sexy muttonchop make-up artist. Runway: Today's judges are Nina, Kors, Heidi and Christian Siriano, who won season 4. Seriously, he's the last one I really remember. Everyone else since then just sort of blends together. Mondo's patent leather, houndstooth, black and white dress inspired by the cables goes over well with the judges. Kors says he likes that he dealt with neutral color but it's full of joy. Nina says it's a phenomenal dress. Heidi says she's seen it before. Christian loves the mix of textiles. Andy's Central Park black hooker dress is working it. Kors says he gets warrior Robert Palmer girl and it fits fabulously. Nina loves the wet look and says it's a perfect black dress for an edgy girl. Gretchen's jacket, skirt and jacket wanted to play with texture and reflect scaffolding. Kors says he's confused and that she lost her steam. "What happened?" says Nina. Gretchen says she's just tired and is sick of the challenges because they're crazy and she has to edit herself into a cookie cutter. Christian likes that it's wearable, but doesn't see it in a collection. April's black asymmetrical-neck flowing gown is supposed to reflect fluidity and structure. Kors says it's numbing because she's made a version of this garment many times and there is never joy in her clothes. "She's a pregnant witch," he says. Heidi just wants some color. Nina says it's a missed opportunity and she's not certain April has any range. Michael wanted his black, bare back, high thigh slit, flowing liberty dress to be a showstopper. Kors says he got it. That it's beautifully cut and draped. Oddly, Michael C. didn't know what kind of fabric he used. Nina says she loved the back (which starts down, down, down.) Christian said the slit was a little high. But Heidi says she's all over it and many women would want to wear this dress. Note that Gretchen said she thought the dress looked like curtains. Michael picks Andy and Mondo to make it to fashion week. Gretchen says Mondo and April. Andy picks Mondo and April. Mondo picks April and Michael C. April picks Mondo and Gretchen. I'm surprised more people didn't pick Andy over April. The first designer to make it to the finals is Michael C. HA HA HA!! Suck it Gretchen and Ivy!! Suck it!! OK, we're taking this a little personally, but people have been so evil to him all season that we dance a little happy joy joy. Mondo takes the second spot for being playful and unique. Andy takes the third place for his perfect black dress with fab seams. Heidi tells them they don't want to see all warrior look all the time. And the last place goes to Gretchen. Apparently the judges love Mrs. Roper and her flowing hippie drapes. Gretchen snidely says she's glad the judges gave her the second chance that all the other designers got. Next week: Tim pays a visit to all the designers....
