Keith Richards On His Relationship With Mick Jagger

By Steven Kurutz In Keith Richards' new memoir, "Life," he writes about his long, complicated relationship with Mick Jagger, recalling that during a fractious time in the 1980s, he began to derisively refer to his bandmate as "Brenda." In the book, Richards characterizes the late-period Jagger as someone who's egocentric, slavish to new musical trends and suspicious of people's motivations to the point of being self-isolated. Perhaps Richards realized that if he wants to tour again as the Rolling Stones, it's not a wise move to insult the singer, because at a talk last night at the New York Public Library the Stones guitarist was noticeably deferential to Mick. Asked about the songwriting process by interviewer Anthony DeCurtis, Richards said that he writes specifically with Jagger in mind. "Midnight Rambler" — ain't nobody else can sing that, except Mick," Richards said. At another point, in discussing the primary differences between the Beatles and the Stones, Richards said the Beatles were a vocal group, while the Stones were more of an instrumental band. "We had one frontman, so he better be good, right? He was the best." Underscoring Richards' place at the very top of the rock and fame firmament, the audience was filled with celebrities like Jimmy Fallon, Lou Reed and Richard Belzer who came to hear Richards speak about his life and career. Paul Holdengräber, director of Live from the NYPL, extended the invitation for Richards to speak after he read an article earlier this year in which the guitarist talked about the importance of libraries, calling the them the great "equalizer." Richards ended the evening by offering the crowd the tantalizing news that, regarding a Stones album or tour, "I do think there will be something next year."...

The 'Erotic Actress' Hiding in Charlie Sheen's Bathroom Knows How t...

Twenty-two-year-old Christina Walsh, the woman who was forced to lock herself in Charlie Sheen's bathroom at the Plaza during his "overblown" "allergic reaction" to some pills he'd been taking, angrily denies the police's attempt to characterize her as a hooker. She was just a girl who met a guy who asked her to go up to his hotel room. Yesterday, Walsh's two pay sites, Club Capri Anderson and Club Alexis Walsh, both linked to the article that outed her identity as a porn star. Walsh has also acted, it's probably safe to say "erotically," under the screen name Alexis Capri. It's like the Mad Libs of porn names: Mediterranean isle plus word that evokes implants. More important, just consider how terrifying the sight of a naked, highly allergic Charlie Sheen ranting about his stolen goods as he was inflicting $7,000 worth of damage to a hotel room must have been if Walsh was able to make it through the production of Filthy's First Taste 7 but Sheen made her fear for her safety. There is a reason that man is the highest-paid actor on American television....

Can Charlie Sheen be saved? - Charlie Sheen - Salon.com

The actor is hospitalized after another dramatic episode. Is he beyond rehabilitation? That Charlie Sheen still has a career at this point is vivid proof of the triumph of hope over experience. Today, the most on television continues to be the most employable screw-up in the world, heading to the set of a feature film where he's doing a small part, before returning to the enduringly mediocre "Two and a Half Men." Not a bad workweek for a man who this weekend disturbed the well-heeled guests of New York's Plaza Hotel with his room-trashing, What The New York Post referred to as a "coke and hooker rampage" appears to have begun when Sheen accused his escort for the evening of taking his wallet and cell phone. He was carted off to the hospital for "for alcohol abuse and psychological evaluation" after reportedly telling police he'd been drinking and using cocaine earlier in the evening (though no drugs were found in his room). His agent Stan Rosenfield has already chalked up the incident to And Sheen's ex-wife Denise Richards, who was staying across the hall and accompanied him to the hospital, told Joy Behar Tuesday, "As far as what happened and what went on, I'd rather leave that for Charlie to discuss if that's something he wants to do because that's something Sheen himself, a man who's still on probation for his December 2009 domestic violence incident in Aspen and who seems coated in Teflon, has so far kept mum on the incident. Few individuals share Sheen's spectacular list of arrests, rehabs, and legendarily bad behavior -- and equally formidable knack for not losing jobs or winning lengthy prison term for their parole violations in the process. As Aspen Deputy District Attorney Arnold Mordkin shrugged to E! this week But while Sheen is a dramatic example of second and third and umpteenth chances, the stubborn talent for messing up in spite of a wealth of resources and encouragement is an all-too-familiar story to anybody who's experienced or loved someone with alcoholism or addiction. And it begs the question – when do we, as friends, family, employers, or even television viewers – give up on a person? Sheen, like plenty of individuals who've struggled with substance abuse, can appear at times a genial, charismatic guy. He has two brothers, one sister, a famous father, two ex-wives, one current spouse and five children. He has people who love him and colleagues who depend on him to not be wasted and destroying hotel rooms. And yet he keeps finding himself in variations of the same pickle, again and again....

Peter Jackson's Deal for 'The Hobbit' Is Finalized

By MICHAEL CIEPLY LOS ANGELES—Apparently, only an ongoing union dispute in New Zealand now stands between "The Hobbit" and a start date in February. Warner Brothers' New Line Cinema unit and MGM have worked out their deal to finance the pair of films to be based on JRR Tolkien's novel, and Peter Jackson's deal to direct is now finalized, according to a person who was briefed on the movie's intricacies this week. But continuing uncertainty over attempts to have the filmmakers bargain collectively with their actors in New Zealand still stands between the production and its planned February start date (already delayed from an anticipated January date). New Zealand officials have said the production can't legally enter a collective bargaining arrangement with its actor-contractors, but unions there have insisted that a deal could be struck. If the studios move the film out of New Zealand, the budget, which already runs into the hundreds of millions of dollars, would have to be redrawn, and at least some further delay would be inevitable. A spokeswoman for New Line declined to comment, as did a spokeswoman for the Screen Actors Guild, which has lent support to the New Zealand actors. A spokeswoman for MGM did not immediately comment....

THH HOBBIT NEWS

New Zealand's 'love affair' with The Hobbit

By Allen O'Leary Playwright At the Premier of The Two Towers in 2005, a red carpet ran for miles through the streets of Wellington, New Zealand. Watched by a 60ft Gollum, tens of thousands lined the streets as the stars walked by. In a strange inversion of post-colonialism Tolkien's fantasy England, "The Shire" had been permanently moved 12,000 miles around the world. So it is hard to imagine that the prequel to the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, could be made anywhere else. But this week the location of the shoot of The Hobbit is up for grabs. There might even be a chance that it could be filmed in the place on which Tolkien's Middle Earth was orginally based, the UK. Getting a film with a price tag in the hundreds of millions to get the green-light has been tough in the recession. Despite initially not wanting to, Peter Jackson has had to put himself into the directing chair to make the project financially viable, and just last week Warner Bros gave the go ahead. Everyone was relieved, from the producers to the Ring Tour operators, who bus fans up and down the countryside on location trips. Everyone was looking forward to another hit of investment, tourism, glamour and, most importantly for a small isolated country, national pride. And then the unions threw a spanner in the works. It is not clear how it started, but NZ Actors Equity, an "autonomous part" of the Australian Media and Entertainment Artists Alliance (MEAA) woke up one day to find that the MEAA had put out a worldwide recommendation that actors not sign up to The Hobbit. The ban received worldwide support and it seemed like a potential show-stopper. On the one hand were actors pointing out the inconsistencies of terms and conditions for NZ actors when compared with their overseas colleagues. On the other were the producers, technicians and other actors upset about this threat to their livelihood. There were also conspiracy theories that Warner Bros were using the threat of their imminent withdrawal to push for better tax breaks. It quickly became clear that this was about more than a film - this was a question of national identity. In rolled the stars, in rolled the millions, in rolled the Oscars. Then the tourists followed. And finally, the Knighthood" The Kiwi identity is bought up on legends of small-town Leonardo de Vincis, of convention-defying iconoclasts who made something from nothing. It is a mould Jackson fits. He made his first movie, Bad Taste, at weekends, and is listed in the credits as producer, cinematographer, special effects, make-up artist, editor, writer and has an acting credit for two roles - including a scene where he fights himself. But, although it is not like the world is full of boys who tried to remake King Kong in stop-motion at the age of nine, it is not unusual for film directors to be that obsessive. What is unique about Jackson is that he stayed in New Zealand. Instead of running to Hollywood to make movies, he performed some magic of his own and got the money to run to him. He built a Hollywood-style film studio in Wellington, a small windy town on the edge of the world. In rolled the stars, in rolled the millions, in rolled the Oscars. Then the tourists followed. And finally, the Knighthood. If individual resourcefulness and "have-a-go" culture is a religion in New Zealand, then Jackson is something of a god. So the unions were always going to find it heavy going to take him on, and last week, after winning some minor concessions, they backed down and pledged that there will be no unrest during the shoot. Problem solved? Not yet. The problem now is that Warner Bros are very nervous about industrial unrest. So, despite the assurances from Equity and the government, which has pledged to change the law if needed, it still could all go to another country. In an extraordinary show of support, thousands of ordinary people took to the streets up and down the country to demonstrate in favour of The Hobbit being made in New Zealand. Jackson, the New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and Warner Bros are getting together on Wednesday for a last-chance talk. The Kiwis will be hoping their show of unity will convince the studio that all the players are a true fellowship. Everyone is now praying that infighting has not cost them Middle Earth. Allen O'Leary is a New Zealand expat playwright living in London. His recent play, My Inner Orc, was about a Lord of the Rings Convention in Croydon....

No Small Roles: 'The Hobbit' Announces Its First Cast Members

By DAVE ITZKOFF Dave Hogan/Getty Images Martin Freeman will play Bilbo Baggins in two films adapted from "The Hobbit." Wherever his "Hobbit" movies get made, Peter Jackson wants you to know he has a cast to appear in them. News surrounding Mr. Jackson's planned two-film adaptation of that JRR Tolkien fantasy novel has lately focused on a labor dispute between the filmmaker and actors' unions in New Zealand and Australia, and whether he will move the film out of his native New Zealand as a result. But Mr. Jackson and the Hollywood studios behind the "Hobbit" features threw eager audiences a bone on Thursday by disclosing some of the key actors in the movies. In a statement published by The Hollywood Reporter, Mr. Jackson and executives at Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer said that the title character of Bilbo Baggins will be played by Martin Freeman, an actor from the British television version of "The Office" and the film "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Mr. Jackson said in the statement that Mr. Freeman "is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave — exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit." Additional cast members include Richard Armitage as the dwarf Thorin Oakenshield; Aidan Turner and Rob Kazinsky as the dwarves Kili and Fili; and Graham McTavish, John Callen, Stephen Hunter, Mark Hadlow and Peter Hambleton as additional members of the dwarf company. Other key roles were not immediately announced, including the wizard Gandalf, a character portrayed in Mr. Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" movies by Ian McKellen. Mr. Jackson and the studios reaffirmed in their statement that the "Hobbit" films would be released in December 2012 and December 2013....

'Hobbit' production to stay in New Zealand - Los Angeles Times

'Hobbit' production to stay in New Zealand The government reaches a deal with Warner Bros. to keep the two-movie project from moving elsewhere after a labor dispute. By Richard Verrier, Los Angeles Times The New Zealand government said Wednesday that "The Hobbit" would keep its feet firmly planted in the small South Pacific nation, ending a short but intense saga over where the expensive two-picture production would be filmed and averting fallout that would have damaged all sides. After two days of talks with Hollywood executives, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key announced that his government had reached a deal with Warner Bros. to shoot the prequel to the "Lord of the Rings" films in the country. Warner Bros. and filmmaker Peter Jackson had threatened to change locations for the planned February production of the $500-million-budget project after a labor dispute that erupted between Jackson and New Zealand Actors Equity, which was seeking to provide union benefits to actors on "The Hobbit." "I am delighted we have achieved this result,'' Key said in a statement. "Making the two Hobbit movies here will not only safeguard work for thousands of , but it will also follow the success of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy in once again promoting New Zealand on the world stage." The agreement comes after Key met with New Line Cinema President Toby Emmerich and Warner Bros. home entertainment chief Kevin Tsujihara in an effort to persuade the studios to keep the production from exiting New Zealand. The Hollywood executives wanted assurances that Warner Bros.' investment would not be threatened by future labor unrest and appeared to be using the prospect of shifting locations as leverage to gain more concessions from the New Zealand government. They succeeded: As part of the agreement, the government said it would broaden the criteria for its film fund, entitling the producers to a rebate of as much as $7.5 million for each of the "Hobbit" movies beyond the $60-million to $75-million subsidy that producers would be eligible to receive under New Zealand's film rebate program. The government also said it would offset $10 million in Warner Bros.' marketing costs as part of a "strategic partnership" to "promote New Zealand as both a film production and tourism destination." 'The Hobbit' will stay in New Zealand, prime minister says Los Angeles Times Staff Writer saga finally appears to be over. The nation's prime minister, John Key, announced Wednesday that his government had reached an agreement with the producers of the two "Hobbit" movies to keep the $500-million production in his country. "I am delighted we have achieved this result,'' Key said in a statement. "Making the two Hobbit movies here will not only safeguard work for thousands of New Zealanders, but it will also follow the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy in once again promoting New Zealand on the world stage." The agreement comes after Key held talks with New Line Cinema President Toby Emmerich and other executives, who wanted assurances that the production would not be disrupted by labor unrest. They also were seeking additional financial sweeteners, which they received. Get breaking news alerts delivered to your mobile phone. Text BREAKING to 52669. As part of the agreement, the government said it would broaden the criteria for its film fund, entitling the producers to receive an additional rebate of up to $7.5 million for each of the "Hobbit" movies. The government also said it will offset $10 million in ' marketing costs as part of a "strategic partnership" with the studio to "promote New Zealand as both a film production and tourism destination." had threatened to move the project, which is expected to begin filming in February, following a labor dispute that had erupted between Jackson and New Zealand Actors Equity, which was seeking to provide union benefits to actors on "The Hobbit." Warner Bros., its New Line Cinema unit and co-financing partner Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer recently greenlighted production of "The Hobbit," which has had a history of setbacks that delayed shooting for years. The dispute caused deep anxiety in New Zealand, where the film industry is one of the largest private employers. This week, more than 2,000 actors, crew members and technicians marched in the capital to support keeping the films in New Zealand. Representatives of Warner Bros. had no immediate comment on the announcement....

Taylor Swift Sued by Former Manager

By Daniel Kreps Taylor Swift's former manager, Dan Dymtrow, has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the country superstar, claiming Swift owes millions in commissions stemming from a contract she signed with him in 2004, when she was 14. The Hollywood Reporter says that Dymtrow, who has also worked with Britney Spears, was fired by Swift's father Scott in July 2005, after which Swift signed with her current label, Big Machine. Dymtrow says he was pushed out because Swift's family wanted to avoid paying his commission after he helped launch her career....

Taylor Swift's intuition

By Chrissie Dickinson, Special to Tribune Newspapers "The whole process of songwriting starts out in a very lonely place for me," says Taylor Swift. Forget for a moment that she's a four-time Grammy Award winner who has moved 13 million albums, 25 million song downloads and is the best-selling digital artist in history. When Swift comes on the phone, she is talking the way songwriters talk: An intuitive who favors feeling above all else. "I sit down to write a song because I'm feeling a very intense emotion, usually an intense form of pain," Swift says. "And I sit there and I'm writing it, and I'm thinking that I'm the only person who has felt this kind of sadness. … And then, the next part, something magical happens. I put that song on an album and it goes out into the world. Then I get to stand on a stage and sing that song to people who are singing the words back. At that point, I don't feel like I'm alone anymore. We're all there in this arena, singing these same words because obviously we've all felt that same kind of sadness." Swift is on the eve of releasing her third studio album, "Speak Now" (Big Machine), which drops Oct. 25. The girl who began her recording career as a teen country-pop phenomenon is now a full-blown crossover star at 20. Some things have not changed: The kid who penned such freshman and sophomore heartbreak hits as " Tim McGraw" and "Fifteen" is now moving into young adulthood, but she still specializes in first-person narratives about love. "Writing about love and relationships is just so much more fascinating to me than writing about jet lag or living on a tour bus or hotels," she says. "I don't write about my career or my schedule. I write about what I feel." And what Swift feels seems to be shared by a significant chunk of the world. "Her audience is big, it is diverse, and I really think they will stay with her through this," says Wade Jessen, Nashville's senior chart manager for Billboard. "I think the younger members of her audience are making that journey with her." Of the four songs made available leading up to the record's official release, "Innocent" signals her greatest maturation as an artist. It's her musical response to Kanye West, who created a media stink last year when he interrupted Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards. Performing the stately pop ballad for the first time at this year's VMAs, Swift took the high road. Her lyrics teemed with forgiveness and empathy, and the notion that renewal is possible even after a very public fall from grace: "Who you are is not what you did." Although the title track of her new release is a peppy but disposable story-song, the singles "Mine" and "Back to December" are classic Swift song-craft, simple but honest expressions of emotion. The wistful pop ballad "Back to December" finds her regretting a breakup with a former boyfriend. The addictively hook-y "Mine" casts Swift as a wounded loner — "a careless man's careful daughter" — who falls for a guy who truly gets her: "There's a drawer of my things at your place/You learn my secrets and figure out why I'm guarded." In these snapshots of love in all its glory and angst, Swift has not retreated from the confessional tone that first drew fans — especially female ones — to her. And just like the girls and young women who confide in her at her meet-and-greets, she wants to be authentically heard. "I think everyone has a desire to be understood," says Swift. "And especially girls like me, and girls my age, we want to be understood in our relationships. We want to feel that someone we're with knows us on a deeper level, and wants to know us on a deeper level. I think that we also want to be heard by society and really have our thoughts be conveyed." Her power to connect with her fans should not be underestimated. In the concert video of her 2008 hit "Fearless," the camera pans her adoring audience and fixes on a fan holding a sign. It is perhaps the most personal love letter of all to Swift: "I Play Guitar Because of U." "There's no question that she's put herself in the place of being a role model for these young women," says Jessen. "I think there's a whole lot in her music — the whole diary aspect, using her own emotions to talk about her challenges — that encourages young people to do the same thing. I think she's made it more comfortable for young people to express what's going on with themselves, which is so key to their survival of those horribly awkward and sometimes dangerous years."...

Taylor Swift's Former Manager Sues for Millions

by Robyn Ross According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Dymtrow says he discovered Swift, signed her in April 2004, and helped build her career. He was axed a year later, right before Swift signed a deal with Big Machine Records and became a superstar. Dymtrow claims that his deal with Swift and her parents allowed him to be paid between 5 and 10 percent commission from Taylor's music career, and that he was fired so the Swifts could avoid compensating him. "They delayed and delayed [the deal] and got rid of my client and subsequently signed the deal and kept his commissions for themselves," Fernando Pinguelo, Dymtrow's attorney, told the Reporter. Dymtrow also said he introduced Swift to the agents that ended up in charge of booking her concert gigs so he's entitle to profit from forming that relationship. Swift's lawyer Paul LiCalski told TVGuide.com, "We don't comment on pending litigation."...

Taylor Swift on Why Real People Inspired Her Album 'Speak Now'

By Christopher John Farley Speakeasy recently traveled down to Nashville to interview country star Taylor Swift, who has a new album due out next week called "Speak Now." You can read our interview with Swift here. Swift had much more to say beyond what made it into the story in today's Wall Street Journal, so we'll be running some of the excerpts this weekend. Check back in to see them. Swift says the songs on the album were all inspired by real people from her life. The tracks have already set up a Web-wide guessing game about whom the lyrics are really about: John Mayer? Taylor Lautner? Kayne West? All of them and more? "I think growing up is a tricky business," says the 20-year-old singer-songwriter. "I've learned all these lessons and come to all these realizations in a very intense two-year period of time. I felt a lot of different intense emotions that I wrote about for this album." Swift says her songs are focused on the people in her life–including ex-boyfriends–because the trappings of her career as a star musician don't inspire her as a writer. "I never write about the road," Swift says. "I never write about hotels or anything like that. I write about how people make me feel. And how what people say makes me feel, And how I wish people would feel about me." Want to check out Swift's new album? Here's a clip from the title track....

Taylor Swift Plays Acoustic Set at Airport

By Patrick Doyle "I'm very happy to be bringing some music to the airport tonight. What do you all think about it?"" Taylor Swift asked an estimated 1,500 fans at John F. Kennedy International Airport last night. Whatever it was the crowd thought of the venue — JetBlue's chaotic terminal 5, with its food court and gift shops — they roared their approval for Swift, who performed a five-song acoustic set for thirty contest winners and their guests, JetBlue employees and customers who just happened to be catching a flight. The star emerged shortly before 7 pm in a red polka-dot dress. "Hello New York — I'm Taylor," she said, kicking into "You Belong With Me." Swift — whose third album, Speak Now, came out Tuesday — sang in key, walking the stage without a guitar and doing her her trademark hair-flip. She peppered her set with the kind of vague references to her personal life that have had bloggers trying to decode her song lyrics and liner notes. She explained that the new ballad "Back to December" is about "learning a lesson too late." "Speak Now," she said, referred to not holding one's peace at a wedding. "Mine"? "It's about one time I was sitting with a guy and he put his arm around me."...

TAYLOR SWIFT NEWS

Taylor Swift: the next chapter

Expectations are high for her third album, 'Speak Now.' Unlike her first two records, she wrote all these songs herself. So the thoughts and feelings are pure Taylor. Taylor Swift (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times) By Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Times Studio A at Capitol Records in Hollywood is the fabled place where Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, the Beach Boys and other stellar names in popular music made some of their most beloved recordings over the last half century. On an unseasonably pleasant day last summer, however, the artist sitting dead center in front of the imposing 60-channel mixing board was Taylor Swift, the erstwhile teen queen of country-pop music who has dominated sales charts and captured the ears of her generation as firmly as any of her celebrated predecessors. To Swift's right is Nathan Chapman, the producer she worked with on her multiplatinum 2006 debut album, "Taylor Swift," and its even bigger-selling 2008 follow-up, "Fearless," albums that have sold nearly 11 million copies combined. On the other side of the glass partition separating the control booth from the studio, leading an orchestra of 28 string players, is Paul Buckmaster, the veteran British conductor-arranger whose string arrangements contributed substantially to the sound and success of Elton John's earliest records as well as more recent recordings by country star Tim McGraw and rock group Train. It's the first time Swift has used an orchestra on record, and she sounds thrilled with what she's hearing as the violinists, violists and cellists bow edgy accents and dramatic countermelodies on two tracks — "Haunted" and "Back to December" — from her highly anticipated third album, "Speak Now," which will be released Monday worldwide. "I couldn't sleep last night I was so freaked about this," Swift, 20, whispers nervously to a visitor seated next to her. "You should have seen me all geeky when I saw the names of the new songs on the sheet music out on their music stands. I was like, 'Oh my God, it's happening.'" "Speak Now" represents a big musical step for Swift. It's one she's taking with a confidence that's made her a favorite of millions of teen girls as well as many of their parents, just as it's bred a legion of skeptics who argue that no one could remain so genuinely thrilled every time she or he steps in front of a TV camera. Scott Borchetta, the veteran Nashville music executive who signed her at age 16 to his nascent Big Machine Records label, is impressed at how she's handled the success she's achieved in the last four years, becoming the biggest selling act in all of pop music. Her debut album was a left-field hit many saw as a fluke. Then "Fearless" came out and proved Swift's appeal was anything but happenstance. Now, Borchetta recognizes the high expectations. "We're not sneaking up on anyone with this one," he said. "For the first time in her career, we're not the underdog. All eyes are on her." Case in point: the new album's first single, "Mine," leaked on the Internet ahead of its scheduled release date, kicking the campaign leading up to the album release into high gear early. It quickly rose to No. 3 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart and has sold more than 1.1 million digital tracks, pushing her total digital track sales above 30 million. "In one breath, you could say everything is on the line," Borchetta said. "But when you really step back, it's just record No. 3, and this is not going to be her last record, whether it sells 5 million copies or a million and a half. That's for her fan base to decide." Back in the studio, Swift is wearing a light blue flower print miniskirt and a white top under a long, lightweight white sweater that dangles below the hem of the skirt. Her waist length brown hair is woven into a single braid that falls over her left shoulder, far enough into her lap that she often fiddles with it during the session with the orchestra. The strings, however, aren't there simply to add musical sweetness; Swift and Chapman, who share production duties as they did on "Fearless," want them to add sonic bite and palpable emotion. The use of the orchestra is one indication of how Swift, pegged as the young singer and songwriter who created a niche for age-specific pop- country music and quickly came to own it, is growing up. Another was her recent arena concert tour, a conceptually ambitious production that presented not just a cavalcade of her hits and album tracks to tens of thousands of fans each night, but a show that took them inside the head, heart and imagination of a typical teenage girl, warts and all. (She'll headline a world tour next year that's scheduled to include 85 shows in 18 countries.) Where she'd worked on her first two albums with various writing partners, this time the songs are hers and hers alone — a source of pride for Swift, who views herself first and foremost as a songwriter. "It was a great move for her," said John Ivey, program director for KIIS-FM (102.7), LA's leading Top 40 station. "I can't tell you how many times on the last two records I heard people say 'She couldn't have possibly written this; it had to be the other writer.'"...

On the Scene As Taylor Swift Serenades Passengers and TSA Employees...

Early yesterday evening, standing outside a nondescript door in JFK's Terminal 5 — somewhere behind which Taylor Swift prepped for her special "surprise" airport concert by the JetBlue gates — one employee of the airline revealed to another that he had been picked to fly Swift across the country on a charter flight after the show. "Who did you blow to get that [job]?" asked his jealous co-worker. They were surrounded by hundreds of others who may or may not have been thinking about fellatio: Fans jammed the hallway of the JetBlue gates, so eager to see her that passengers trying to actually fly somewhere had to push their way through to get to their gates. For all the relationship woes that she pours into her lyrics, Swift didn't have as much baggage as this audience. The crowd by the stage was sizable — easily 500 people, many of whom had no idea Swift was coming until they showed up at the airport. One woman, Sheila, was supposed to board just as the concert began, but her flight was delayed three hours. She called her granddaughters to brag that she'd be seeing Swift, but they were too busy on the field-hockey field to pick up. She was more interested in Swift's music than Stuart, a middle-aged guy eating alone at Deep Blue, Terminal 5's sushi restaurant. Until he walked into the airport and saw her poster, Stuart said he didn't even know Swift was blonde. Regardless, he was still planning to go watch the concert when it starts: "Someone once told me she's pretty good-looking, so I'll go take a look." Others flew in just for the show, figuring plane tickets were cheaper than the black market for Swift's regular concert tickets. True, but most concerts don't get delayed because of fog. One family that flew in from Tampa to see her had arrived at JFK in the morning, left the airport to enjoy a day in the city, and came back to find their post-show flight home canceled; as a result, their access back into the terminal was revoked, and an hour before the show, they were left stranded outside the security check-in. They weren't sure which was more disappointing: being stuck in New York, or being stuck outside the concert. Moments before Swift was due onstage, commerce in the airport basically came to a halt. Shopkeepers lined their stores' thresholds, smartphones at the ready. Burly baggage handlers still wearing their orange reflective vests came upstairs to watch. Over the PA system, a layman's voice said, "This will serve as a gate-change announcement," like a practical joke. And then, a little after 6:30, the nondescript doors opened, and Swift descended. She was escorted past Deep Blue, Borders, and the nondescript gadget shop onto the stage. Once the crowd saw her red polka-dot dress, they screamed in a way that usually summons Homeland Security. She opened with 2009's "You Belong With Me" and then, apparently surprised to see us, she said, "Well, hello New York." Everybody screamed, even though there were likely more people here from out of town than from the boroughs. "I'm very happy to be bringing some music to the airport," she continues, "What do you think?" The crowd thought that it was time for more screaming. Most of the people in the terminal's lobby were now collected around the stage. But a few stragglers held the line. One man in a fitted gray suit tapped away at his MacBook Pro as a preschooler wearing shiny velour pants stood on the table, rapt with attention. Her mom tried to talk to her but she didn't move, even to shoo her mother away. Swift rounded out her five-song set with "Back to December," "Love Story," "Speak Now," and "Mine." The acoustics were poor, with her voice drowned out by the bass, but it's hard to retrofit a 55,000-square-foot lobby as a concert venue. More disappointing, though, was that she sang the lyric "I was a flight risk with a fear of falling" without acknowledging the situational irony. And then, less than 30 minutes after she took the stage, she was done. She left as her band plays the outro to "Mine," and hurried, head down, back to that nondescript door. She had a flight to catch from a lucky employee....

What Taylor Swift haters get wrong - Celebrity - Salon.com

What Taylor Swift haters get wrong Unlike Miley Cyrus' awkward image makeover, the 21-year-old's transition to adulthood seems genuine Taylor Swift in her music video for the song ""Mine" The transition from innocent kid to mature adult is hard enough even if you're not a superstar. But throw in a few red carpets, magazine covers and screaming fans, and it's a miracle any young celebrity gets out of adolescence unscathed. The highway of fame is littered with Britneys and Lindsays, girls who learned the hard way the grueling price of being America's teen sweetheart. And as continues to find new ways to shock and Miley Cyrus awkwardly sheds her Hannah Montana skin, the most successful young lady in music today is turning out to be a restrained girl from Pennsylvania whose greatest public scandal thus far involved getting upstaged by a motor-mouthed rapper. Taylor Swift, whose album "Speak Now" is being released today, is no typical pop tart. Sure, she's blond and pretty; she's been linked with Joe Jonas and "Twilight" star in oh-so-convenient tabloid-ready romances and her wardrobe choices are regular fodder for the . But she's also, by letting herself be exactly what she is – a 21 year old girl – something of a wonder. Unlike her just slightly older peers Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, Swift has no knowing, cartoony shtick. She doesn't disappear into elaborate costumes or overproduced, auto-tuned-within-an-inch-of-life hit singles. In fact, the most consistent source of criticism is her defiant realness. Last winter, she became the youngest artist to win the Grammy for Album of the Year – and picked up three top awards along the way. Yet what was the big water cooler subject the next day? Her duet with Stevie Nicks -- roundly criticized as . But as a friend who's a Broadway vocal coach pointed out at the time, Swift had the gumption to get out there resolutely unsweetened. You've got to feel for the girl; every time she shows up to pick up an armful of prizes, it seems the critics are there to leap in and tell her she didn't deserve it. Her most recent VMA appearance was considerably less dramatic than last year's: Swift caught flack for her low-key, . Spin summed it up when it crowed that it was a "melodramatic ... Livejournal entry set to music." But it would have been strange not to address the infamous 2009 incident, and she turned the episode into a blast of sincerity and blessedly unmanipulated singing in an otherwise auto-tuned and lip-synced evening. Did Justin Bieber or Usher dare to sing in such a bare-boned way? Not even close. She was also, in an era of Twitter feuds and reality TV meltdowns, extraordinarily gracious....

Times Popcast: Taylor Swift, Dierks Bentley and Wrapping CMJ

By THE NEW YORK TIMES Country music is the focus this week on Popcast, the music podcast of The Times. Jon Caramanica discusses Taylor Swift's strategy of anger and revenge on her new album, "Speak Now," which takes aim at critics and bad ex-boyfriends who might or might not be John Mayer. "Taylor's gasoline is revenge and payback," says Mr. Caramanica, who wrote about the album in Arts & Leisure. "Writing a song about John Mayer is about the most mercenary thing you can do. It's almost worse than going on the cover of People magazine and saying, 'John Mayer broke my heart,' because then it's a war of words about truth. But if you write a song about it, that song is indelible." Jon Caramanica on Taylor Swift, a performance by Dierks Bentley and Times critics wrap up CMJ. Taylor Swift Kisses and Tells ... and Goes Too Far

Sady Doyle - Sady Doyle is a freelance writer based in New York City. She blogs at Tiger Beatdown. Sady Doyle is a writer living in New York. She has contributed to Salon's Broadsheet, the American Prospect, the Guardian's Comment is Free, and Feministe. She blogs at Tigerbeatdown.com. Taylor Swift Kisses and Tells ... and Goes Too Far Like it or not, Taylor Swift is apparently the confessional female singer/songwriter of her generation. Articles breathlessly describe the "revealing" nature of her work, and report statements she's made like "I continue to write music about my life and my life is always changing" as if no-one had tried such a thing before. And with her third album Speak Now, there's more attention than ever being paid to what she's confessing. Which is entirely predictable: Her life now includes plenty of famous names, including allegedly faithless Disney star Joe Jonas, Twilight heartthrob Taylor Lautner, and tabloid fixture John Mayer. Although Swift is coy in interviews, she leaves plenty of clues as to the identities of her subjects, and never denies that these are the men she's singing about, making listening to Speak Now more like reading an extremely emotional issue of Us Weekly than taking in a new, soon-to-be-hit album. Of course, celebrities writing about celebrities is a long-standing tradition. So are attempts to figure out exactly who is the target of each song. Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" was released in 1972; Simon was still releasing "clues" about it early this year, and all we know is that it's not about Mick Jagger, it might be partly about Warren Beatty, and Simon says it has nothing to do with a "David" despite reported confirmation from her representatives that it does. Joni Mitchell attached names to her songs only intermittently; "Willy" is pretty much explicitly about Graham Nash, but according to the biography Girls Like Us, she told one friend that "A Case of You" was about Leonard Cohen, and another that it was about James Taylor. Tori Amos's fans are still trying to figure out the exact nature of her relationship with Trent Reznor, based on a handful of lyrical references and the fact that they seemed close in the mid-90s. Sure, you'll get an occasional Fleetwood Mac, whose Rumors deliberately played with their well-known break-ups and changing alliances. But Swift makes detecting the identities of her subjects remarkably easy. The girl who once proclaimed that "every single one of the guys that I've written songs about has been tracked down on MySpace by my fans" is including names, professions, and ages in her lyrics, seemingly to ensure that her subjects can be hunted down like dogs, potentially by the media, which participates ever more eagerly in the game of Find the Dirty Laundry. Swift's closest contemporary, in terms of willingness to specify her subjects, might just be (speaking of Trent Reznor) Courtney Love. In comparison to her forebears, however, Swift's "autobiographical" songs feel alarmingly market-driven. Confessional writing is meant to implicate the writer more than anyone else; Mitchell wrote lyrics like "I'm so hard to handle, I'm selfish, and I'm sad," and the sentiment was so vulnerable and brave that it didn't matter who the "best baby she'd ever had" actually was. Swift, by comparison, has built her career on strongly worded condemnations of others, with nary an incriminating self-disclosure in sight; on Speak Now, the closest she can come is admitting, on "Back in December," that she feels bad about breaking up with Taylor Lautner. The real draw of her songs is not their emotional intimacy, but the fun of pinning celebrity faces to specific songs. Swift's strategy of building her career by tying her name to other attention-getting names goes back to her first single, "Tim McGraw." The president of Big Machine Records explained why they chose to name the song after the country superstar: "We put that out deliberately, so people would ask, who's this new artist with a song called 'Tim McGraw'?" Swift's choice to write about Lautner is similarly convenient. Their relationship was short, reportedly anywhere from three to six months in duration. But it garnered lots of positive publicity for them both, which they actively courted; both referenced it when appearing on Saturday Night Live. A single about him seems like a prudent financial investment; the story is a proven draw, so it's guaranteed promotion for her work. And, considering the boost that her previous album got from tying woman-scorned songs to the very bankable name of Joe Jonas (whose cross-marketing potential didn't exactly go untapped during their relationship) it's in line with previously established modes of revenue generation and marketing for the Taylor Swift brand. One song from the new album, "Better Than Revenge," hangs on the lines "she's an actress / but she's better known for the things she does on the mattress." (Yes, there is already speculation on the identity of the actress in question.) Although Swift has done a great deal to distance her public image from mattresses, and the unspeakable things done thereupon, it's worth noting that she's a singer and actress, and she's better known for her involvement with various heartthrobs who are popular with her target demographic than she is for, say, her vocal range. The hype around the new song "Dear John," a nearly seven-minute-long odyssey through the seas of petulance, is based pretty much entirely on the idea that she might have slept with John Mayer. Swift cashes in on her associations with men even when they're not intimates. "Innocent," a power ballad about the Kanye West incident at last year's VMAs, devotes over five minutes to an interruption that clocked in at about thirty seconds. But it had built-in marketing opportunities: She got to debut it at the VMAs, thus assuring herself of another spotlight moment and reminding everyone of the sales-boostingcontroversy. Which isn't to condemn Swift totally, or to say that her much-publicized dating life or much-published feelings are entirely artificial. It's just hard to believe that the most important emotional moments in Taylor Swift's life line up, so very closely, with the most important moments in her tabloid narrative. Yet her songs seize upon them unfailingly. Early in her career, Swift embraced social media in order to build a fan base; now, she's tapped into one of the most troubling problems facing the music industry. The Internet has given us an unprecedented amount of access to personal information about celebrities, creating the very hunger for information it aims to satisfy, yet it's also decimated record sales. Swift, as others have noted, has become "her own TMZ." You can hear that she may have dated John Mayer anywhere, but for the real, true, unfiltered tell-all, buy Speak Now! Available wherever fine music and/or gossip is sold! Remember: If you pirate the album, you'll miss out on the top-secret coded messages in the CD booklet! It's ethically questionable (pity Joe Jonas, forced to take to his own MySpace blog to explain to an audience of angry, sheltered tweens that "maybe there were reasons for a breakup") but it sells. Still, there is nothing like listening to Speak Now to make you appreciate Carly Simon. Speaking in 2005 about "You're So Vain," she said that she didn't see the point of naming the subject. "If people knew who it was to begin with," she said, "it might not have become a hit."...

And with that, all talk of cheating is over and done with....
